8.1 Introduction
Why do we eat when hungry? Why do we study for exams? Why do we feel happy, angry, or afraid? The answers lie in motivation and emotion — two interrelated processes that energise and direct our behaviour.
8.2 Nature of Motivation
Motivation refers to the internal processes that energise, direct, and sustain behaviour towards a goal.

8.3 Types of Motives

McClelland’s research found that people high in need for achievement prefer tasks of moderate difficulty — challenging enough to give a sense of accomplishment, but not so difficult as to guarantee failure.
8.4 Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
Abraham Maslow proposed that human needs are arranged in a hierarchy — lower-level needs must be satisfied before higher-level needs become motivating.

Self-actualisation is the highest level — the desire to become everything one is capable of becoming. Maslow believed only a small percentage of people achieve full self-actualisation.
Evaluation:

- Criticised for being too rigid — people may pursue higher needs even when lower ones are not fully met
- Cultural bias — the hierarchy may not apply equally across all cultures (some cultures may prioritise community over individual achievement)
8.5 Nature of Emotions
Emotion is a complex state involving subjective feelings, physiological arousal, cognitive appraisal, and behavioural expressions.
Components of Emotion

Basic Emotions
Paul Ekman identified several universal basic emotions expressed through facial expressions:

- Display rules: Cultures differ in when, where, and how emotions should be expressed
- Example: In some East Asian cultures, expressing strong negative emotions in public is discouraged
- In some Western cultures, expressing emotions openly is more acceptable
8.6.2 Culture and Emotional Labelling
- Different cultures may categorise emotions differently
- Some cultures have emotion words that do not have direct equivalents in other languages
- Example: The German word Schadenfreude (pleasure from another’s misfortune) has no single English equivalent
8.7 Managing Negative Emotions
Negative emotions such as anger, anxiety, fear, and sadness are natural, but if not managed well, they can impair health, relationships, and performance.
