1.1 Concept, Aims & Objectives of Physical Education

Concept of Physical Education

Physical education is an integral part of the total education process. It is a field of endeavor that has as its aim the improvement of human performance through the medium of physical activities that have been selected with a view to realizing this outcome. In modern times, physical education is not merely confined to physical exercises or body building, but it is holistic—focusing on the physical, mental, emotional, and social development of an individual.

Aims & Objectives

The central aim of Physical Education is the wholesome development of an individual, making them physically fit, mentally alert, emotionally balanced, and socially well-adjusted.

The main objectives are:

  1. Physical Development: Developing physical fitness components such as strength, speed, endurance, flexibility, and coordinative abilities.
  2. Mental/Cognitive Development: Acquiring knowledge about body systems, rules of games, health, and disease prevention.
  3. Social Development: Developing leadership qualities, cooperation, sportsmanship, and teamwork.
  4. Emotional Development: Controlling emotions like anger, fear, jealousy, and learning how to handle victory and defeat gracefully.
  5. Neuro-Muscular Coordination: Developing a better relationship between the nervous system and the muscular system to perform smooth, coordinated movements.

Note: Physical education prepares an individual not just for sports, but for life. The holistic approach is what separates physical education from simple physical training.


1.2 Development of Physical Education in India – Post Independence

After India gained independence in 1947, significant steps were taken to promote physical education and sports:

  • 1948: Tara Chand Committee was formed to suggest ways to develop physical education.
  • 1950: The Central Advisory Board of Physical Education and Recreation was established.
  • 1953: Rajkumari Amrit Kaur Coaching Scheme was introduced to provide quality coaching to athletes.
  • 1954: All India Council of Sports was established.
  • 1957: Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE) was established in Gwalior, offering specialized degrees in physical education.
  • 1961: Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NSNIS) was set up in Patiala to produce elite coaches.
  • 1984: Sports Authority of India (SAI) was established to promote sports and achieve sporting excellence at the national and international levels.

Modern sports has seen massive technological and material advancements. This section highlights the changing trends.

Playing Surface

Traditionally, sports were played on natural grass, clay, or mud. Today, synthetic surfaces have revolutionized the game:

  • Astroturf (Artificial Grass): Widely used in hockey and football. Provides consistent bounce, requires less maintenance, and is unaffected by weather.

1.5 Khelo India Programme and Fit India Programme

Khelo India Programme

Launched in 2018, the Khelo India (Play India) Programme aims to revive the sports culture in India at the grass-root level by building a strong framework for all sports played in the country and establishing India as a great sporting nation.
