Concept of Physical Education

Physical education is an integral part of the total education process. It is a field of endeavor that has as its aim the improvement of human performance through the medium of physical activities that have been selected with a view to realizing this outcome. In modern times, physical education is not merely confined to physical exercises or body building, but it is holistic—focusing on the physical, mental, emotional, and social development of an individual.

Aims & Objectives

The central aim of Physical Education is the wholesome development of an individual, making them physically fit, mentally alert, emotionally balanced, and socially well-adjusted.

The main objectives are:

  1. Physical Development: Developing physical fitness components such as strength, speed, endurance, flexibility, and coordinative abilities.
  2. Mental/Cognitive Development: Acquiring knowledge about body systems, rules of games, health, and disease prevention.
  3. Social Development: Developing leadership qualities, cooperation, sportsmanship, and teamwork.
  4. Emotional Development: Controlling emotions like anger, fear, jealousy, and learning how to handle victory and defeat gracefully.
  5. Neuro-Muscular Coordination: Developing a better relationship between the nervous system and the muscular system to perform smooth, coordinated movements.

Note: Physical education prepares an individual not just for sports, but for life. The holistic approach is what separates physical education from simple physical training.


1.2 Development of Physical Education in India – Post Independence

After India gained independence in 1947, significant steps were taken to promote physical education and sports:

The core values of Olympism are:

  1. Excellence: This value is not just about winning or being the best. It means giving one’s best both on the field of play and in life—enjoying the participation, pushing one’s boundaries, and striving for personal improvement.

  • Kumbhaka: Retention of breath (Antar Kumbhaka = Internal retention; Bahya Kumbhaka = External retention)

Types of Pranayama

  1. Suryabhedana: Inhaling through the right nostril and exhaling through the left. Increases body heat and vital energy.
  2. Ujjayi: ‘Victorious breath’. A slight constriction in the throat creates an oceanic sound. Warms the body and calms the mind.
  3. Sheetali: Cooling breath through a rolled tongue. Reduces body temperature and quenches thirst.
