Chapter 6: Test, Measurements & Evaluation

6.1 Definitions and Importance

Define Test, Measurement, and Evaluation

  • Test: A tool, instrument, procedure, or technique used to obtain data about specific skills, traits, or components of fitness. For example, a stopwatch is an instrument used in the 50m sprint test.
  • Measurement: The process of obtaining a numerical score or quantitative data based on the test. It refers to the score (e.g., scoring 6.5 seconds in a 50m sprint).
  • Evaluation: The process of interpreting the measurement data and making a qualitative judgment or decision based on it. It gives meaning to the measurement (e.g., concluding that a 6.5-second sprint is an ‘Excellent’ rating for a 15-year-old).

Importance in Sports

  • Setting goals and objectives for athletes.
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of a training program.
  • Classifying students/athletes into homogeneous groups.
  • Diagnosing weaknesses and predicting future performance.
  • Motivating athletes to improve their numerical scores.

6.2 Motor Fitness Tests

The primary purpose of motor fitness testing is to assess an individual’s basic athletic abilities.

AAHPER Motor Fitness Test Items

  1. 50-Yard Dash: Measures pure running speed.
  2. 600-Yard Run/Walk: Measures cardiovascular endurance.
  3. Standing Broad Jump: Measures explosive leg power.
  4. Shuttle Run (4x10 yards): Measures agility and speed.
  5. Pull-Ups (Boys) / Flexed Arm Hang (Girls): Measures upper-body muscular strength and endurance.
  6. Sit-Ups (1 minute): Measures abdominal muscular endurance.

6.3 Cardiovascular Fitness: Harvard Step Test & Rockport Test

These tests measure aerobic capacity, which is the efficiency of the heart and lungs during prolonged exercise.

Harvard Step Test

Developed by Brouha et al. (1943) at Harvard University, it is a test of aerobic fitness.

  • Equipment: A bench (20 inches high for men, 16 inches for women), stopwatch, metronome.
  • Procedure: The subject steps up and down on the bench at a rate of 30 steps/minute for 5 minutes (or until exhaustion).
  • Pulse Count: After finishing, the subject rests seated. The pulse is counted during three recovery periods:
    • 1 to 1.5 minutes (Pulse 1)
    • 2 to 2.5 minutes (Pulse 2)
    • 3 to 3.5 minutes (Pulse 3)

Fitness Index Calculation Formula (Long Form): \[ \text{Fitness Index} = \frac{\text{Duration of Exercise in Seconds} \times 100}{2 \times (\text{Pulse}_1 + \text{Pulse}_2 + \text{Pulse}_3)} \]

Calculation Formula (Short Form): \[ \text{Fitness Index} = \frac{\text{Duration of Exercise in Seconds} \times 100}{5.5 \times \text{Pulse}_1} \]

Rockport 1-Mile Walk Test

An alternative cardiovascular fitness test, especially suitable for sedentary or elderly individuals who cannot run or do the step test.

  • Procedure: The subject walks 1 mile (1609 meters) as fast as possible on a track.
  • Measurement: Record the time taken to complete 1 mile. Immediately upon finishing, record the heart rate (beats per minute).

6.4 Rikli and Jones Senior Citizen Fitness Test

Designed specifically to assess the functional fitness of older adults (aged 60 and above), enabling them to perform daily activities safely.

  1. Chair Stand Test: Number of full stands from a seated position in 30 seconds. (Lower body strength).
  2. Arm Curl Test: Number of bicep curls completed in 30 seconds holding a dumbbell (5 lbs for women, 8 lbs for men). (Upper body strength).
  3. Chair Sit and Reach Test: Sitting on the edge of a chair, extending one leg straight, and reaching toward the toes. Measures flexibility of the lower back and hamstring muscles.
  4. Back Scratch Test: Trying to touch or overlap the middle fingers of both hands behind the back. Measures upper body (shoulder) flexibility.
  5. Eight Foot Up and Go Test: Getting out of a chair, walking 8 feet around a cone, and returning to a seated position as fast as possible. Measures speed, agility, and balance.
  6. Six-Minute Walk Test: Maximum distance walked in 6 minutes along a 50-yard course. Measures aerobic endurance.

6.5 Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)

BMR represents the minimum number of calories your body needs to perform basic, life-sustaining functions while at rest (e.g., breathing, circulation, cell production).

It is calculated using the Mifflin-St. Jeor Equation:

For Men: \[ \text{BMR} = (10 \times \text{weight in kg}) + (6.25 \times \text{height in cm}) - (5 \times \text{age in years}) + 5 \]

For Women: \[ \text{BMR} = (10 \times \text{weight in kg}) + (6.25 \times \text{height in cm}) - (5 \times \text{age in years}) - 161 \]


6.6 Johnson-Metheny Test of Motor Educability

Motor educability is the ability to learn new motor skills easily and quickly. The test battery consists of 4 items performed on a mat:

  1. Front Roll: Forward gymnastic roll.
  2. Back Roll: Backward roll.
  3. Jumping Half-Turn: Jumping in the air, rotating 180 degrees, and landing on the feet.
  4. Jumping Full-Turn: Jumping in the air, rotating 360 degrees, and completing the rotation symmetrically. (Performance is scored out of a maximum qualitative number of points based on form and execution).
